Relax Kagylótábla / Relax Mussel Board

2022 decemberében kimentem a Hajógyári szigetcsúcshoz, hogy hátha találok nagyobb kagylóhéjakat a Duna partján, amikre majd tudok festeni valamit. Nagy kagylók nem voltak, de mivel száraz tél volt, nagyon alacsony volt a vízállás, így előbukkant pár kis sziget is, ahova át lehetett lépkedni a köveken. Kis séta után tűnt fel, hogy minden kis szigeten rengeteg, apró, 1-2 centiméteres kagylóhéj volt. Elképesztő mennyiségben.

In December 2022, I went to the Shipyard Island Point to see if I could find some larger shells on the riverbank of the Danube to paint something on. There were no large shells, but as it was a dry winter and the water level was very low, some small islands appeared where I could walk across the stones. After a short walk it became apparent that every small island was covered with countless tiny shells measuring 1-2 centimeters in size. An amazing amount.

Gyűjtöttem valamennyit egy zacskóba és otthon lemostam, letisztogattam őket. Két részre lehetett csoportosítani, a fekete-fehér és a barnás-sárga színű csoportba. A neten megkerestem, kiderült, hogy a Nagy kosárkagylóról (Corbicula fluminea) van szó, ami egy erősen invazív faj, vagyis agresszívan terjeszkedik, Kelet-Ázsiából származik, de ma már az egész világon elterjedt. Az a probléma vele, hogy nagyon gyorsan szaporodik, kiszorítja a helyi fajokat, károsítja a vízvezetékeket, sőt még az atomerőművek vízhűtését is veszélyezteti. És még a homok minőségét is rontja. Egyébként mi emberek segítettük a terjeszkedésben, a sok szállítmány ami Ázsiából érkezik, sajnos olyan helyekre is eljutatta a fajt, ahová önerőből nem tudott volna eljutni a távolság miatt. De erről ő nem tehet, mint minden élőlény, ő is csodálatos és része az Egésznek, csak teszi, amit tennie kell.

I collected some in a bag and washed and cleaned them at home. They could be grouped into two parts, the black and white group and the brownish-yellow group. I looked it up on the net, and it turned out to be the large basket mussel (Corbicula fluminea), which is a highly invasive species, meaning it is aggressively expanding, originating from East Asia, but now spreading all over the world. The problem is that it multiplies very rapidly, displacing native species, damaging water pipes and even threatening the water cooling of nuclear power plants. And it even degrades the quality of sand. By the way, we humans have helped the species to expand, and the many shipments coming from Asia have unfortunately taken the species to places where it could not have reached on its own because of the distance. But it’s not its fault, like all living beings, it is wonderful and part of the Whole, it just does what it has to do.

A barnás-sárga csoportból, különválogattam a “nagyokat”, ami 2,3 – 2,5 cm szélességet jelent. Volt majdnem 400 db. Jó kis puzzle. Lefeküdtem aludni, de azon kezdtem el gondolkodni, hogy vajon átengedik-e a fényt a kagylóhéjak, vagy sötétben töltik az életüket. Kipróbáltam a fejlámpámmal és kiderült, hogy sárgás, szinte arany színben szűrik meg a fényt. Másnap megkerestem a fehér színű fényfüzért, egy kartonlapot kilyukasztottam egy sorban, beleraktam a ledeket, a másik oldalra meg ráraktam ugyanannyi kagylót tesztnek. Nagyon jól mutatott.

From the brownish-yellow group, I sorted out the “large ones”, which means a width of 2,3 – 2,5 cm. There were almost 400 of them. A nice puzzle. I went to bed, but started wondering if the shells would let the light through or spend their lives in the dark. I tried it out with my headlamp and found that they filtered light in a yellowish, almost golden colour. The next day I found the white-coloured string light, made holes in a row in a cardboard sheet, put the LEDs in, and put the same number of shells on the other side as a test. It showed very well.

A következő hetekben a 320 db ledhez kiválogattam a kagylókat, lemértem mekkora táblán férne el, és egy céggel készíttettem egy fehér, opálos plexilapot, 320 furattal. Ezekbe beragasztottam egyesével a ledeket. Azért közben teltek a hetek, mert mindezeket csak munka előtt és után tudtam végezni. De végül a kagylókat ráraktam a ledekre és végre meg tudtam nézni, hogy fog egyben kinézni. Nagyon megnyugtató volt ránézni, aranysárga, rendezett sorokban álló szigetek a fehéren derengő vízen, mindegyik más egy kicsit, az egyik kagyló világosabb, a másik sötétebb. Már csak rögzíteni kellett a kagylóhéjakat. De hogyan?

In the following weeks I selected the shells for the 320 LEDs, measured how big they would fit on the board, and had a company make a white opal plexiglass board with 320 holes. I glued the LEDs one by one into these. The weeks went by in the meantime because I could only do all this before and after work. But finally I put the shells on the LEDs and could finally see what it would look like in one piece. It was very reassuring to look at them, golden yellow islands in neat rows on the white water, each one a little different, one shell lighter, one darker. All that remained was to attach the shells. But how?

És akkor jött két év szünet. Próbák, tesztek, levelezés a plexis céggel, csupa zsákutca. Ugyanis a plexi olyan síma felületű, hogy semmilyen ragasztó nem működött a kagylóhéjakkal, még a pillanatragasztó sem, ráadásul összemaszatolták a felületet. A cégnél sem nagyon tudtak mit tanácsolni. Úgyhogy egy ideig kísérletezgettem, közben nyár lett, amikor is aludt a projekt, majd ősszel egyszer csak eszembe jutott a megoldás.

And then came a two-year break. Trials, tests, correspondence with the plexiglass company, all dead ends. Because the plexiglass was so flat that no glue would work with the shells, not even superglue, and the surface was smeared. The company didn’t have much advice either. So I experimented for a while, and then summer came and the project went dormant, and then in the autumn I suddenly had a solution.

Epoxi gyanta. Folyékony, hőhatás nélkül ragad és átlátszó marad, amikor megszilárdul. Rendeltem fakeretet a plexilaphoz, de még mindig várnom kellett, hogy valaki megmutassa, hogyan kell az epoxival dolgozni. 2024 ősszel egy vásárban találkoztam Álmival (Nagy Álmos), aki fából asztalokat és más bútorokat, dísztárgyakat készít epoxival díszítve. Meséltem neki a projektről, felajánlotta, hogy megmutatja, hogyan kell az epoxit kikeverni, kiszámolni az öntéshez megfelelő mennyiséget. Az ő segítségével, mert még a fakeret mérethibáit is kijavította, leszilózta az illesztéseket, lelakkozta szépre, végül 2025 elején elkészült a ‘Relax Kagylótábla’.

Epoxy resin. Fluid, sticks without heat and remains transparent when solidified. I ordered a wooden frame for the plexiglas sheet, but I still had to wait for someone to show me how to work with epoxy. In the autumn of 2024, I met Almi (Almos Nagy) at a fair, who makes wooden tables and other furniture and ornaments decorated with epoxy. I told him about the project, he offered to show me how to mix the epoxy, calculate the right amount for pouring. With his help, because he even corrected the dimensional errors on the wooden frame, protect the edges with Siloplast, varnished it to a nice finish, the ‘Relax Mussel Board’ was finally finished in early 2025.
